Joe Henry Carter, 2005
Mr. Carter was Greenbrier High's first full-time coach of an eleven-man football team and its basketball coach from 1929-1943. Before moving to GHS he coached at Coopertown School for one year.
Mr. Carter was the coach of the 1929-30 Basketball Team that finished third in the state tournament The Voice (Dec. 1939), GHS's student newspaper, recounts that the 1938-39 boys team was its highest scoring team to date, scoring about 1,000 points in 24 games, an average of almost 42 points per game. Mr. Carter was sometimes heard to speak about the fact that he sometimes had to "strongly insist" that some of the boys wear helmets in football games. Although Mr. Carter began a new career in insurance in 1943, he never lost his enthusiasm for sports, especially at GHS. |
