William Lynn Pitt, 2014
William Pitt was a standout in football and member of the graduating Class of 1966.
During his time on the football team he was a part of the All Red River Valley Conference and the All-Midstate teams. During his career at GHS he had 9 punt returns for touchdowns. He was voted Most Athletic in his class. In May, 1968, William enlisted in the Marine Corp. Following basic training, he was sent to Vietnam. In August 1968, he was killed by enemy artillery fire. Just two days prior to William's enlisting in the Marine Corp, Dwight Carroll, an outstanding athlete himself and graduate of Springfield High School in 1966 was serving in the Marine Corp in Vietnam when he, too, was killed. In honor of William and Dwight, who battled each other on the gridiron but became good friends, the American Legion Post 45 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2120 established the "Carroll-Pitt Trophy" that is annually awarded to the winner of the Greenbrier-Springfield football game. |
