William Savage (Sam) Phillips, 2005

Sam Phillips graduated in 1930 and participated in basketball, football and baseball. He led the state in scoring as a member of the 1929-30 basketball team that finished 3rd in the state.  He was named to State All Tournament Team.

After being named Best All Round Student his senior year, he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on a baseball scholarship. In 1933, he was named to the All SEC 2nd Team in basketball.

​Following his graduation from college, he played several years of minor league baseball.
